MF DNES: The recent floods were the worst in Europe for 500 years

European scientists, including experts from the MU Faculty of Science, have mapped the occurrence of floods over the past five centuries. The extensive historical survey of European floods has now been published in the journal Nature. Read more in today's MF DNES (only in Czech).

We announce the very sad news that Professor František Lukeš, who worked for many years at the Department of Condensed Matter Physics in the MU Faculty of Science and was, among other things, Vice-Rector of the University between 1990-1992, has died.

Rains benefit animals

This year, with its high rainfall, has witnessed the return of some particularly rare species, including the critically endangered tadpole shrimp that has now reappeared in field ponds of southern Moravia. The localities where tadpole shrimps and other critically endangered species have been found are being mapped by scientists from Masaryk University. The first astrophysicist to observe the cosmic web is coming to Brno

The universe has fascinated him since he was a child. He studies the influence of black holes on the evolution of galaxies, discovered an explosion that can only be beaten by the Big Bang and was the first to use X-ray telescopes to observe the fibres of the cosmic web. Now, the world-renowned astrophysicist Norbert Werner will be joining the space research centre at our faculty.
